Last year’s summer interior trend was to bring the outside in and while that theme is certainly continuing into 2022, there are also a few new entries to consider.

Whether you’re staging your home for sale or looking to put your own stamp on a recent property purchase, here is some inspiration for summer styling that soothes as well as looks good.

Summer lovin’ self-spaces

After a couple of challenging years, we’re now having to deal with increased levels of stress thanks to the cost of living crisis, so it’s no wonder people are turning towards self-care at home.

Over a third of Britons have already created spaces in their homes dedicated to self-care, such as wellness rooms or areas that cater to their favourite hobbies. In addition, almost half said this would be a priority in their property search.

Research by Not On The High Street revealed the top three most wanted self-care spaces are reading corners, home gyms and walk-in wardrobes. The idea is to remove day-to-day clutter that might increase stress, and help people to feel physically and mentally healthy.

Say goodbye to grey

Despite 50 shades of grey being a paint mainstay in many homes for years, it seems the colour is finally on its way out. Greens, blues and lilacs aren’t just creeping into our wardrobes this summer, but into our homes too.

Almost any shade of green is said to be on-trend, perhaps inspired by our newfound love for the outside and natural materials (more on that later). Some experts are even claiming that verdant shades will replace magnolia as the neutral anchor when decorating.

Purple and lilac tones are very in vogue and work on anything from furniture to front doors, with the latter claiming to potentially increase the value of your home! It’s cobalt blue, however, that is expected to top the list of summer interior design colours.

Biophilic design

Following on from last year’s trend, more of us are transforming our homes by maximising natural light and materials to actually connect spaces with nature rather than simply give the feeling of it.

Materials such as stone are proving hugely popular, in large-scale pieces like dining room tables as well as smaller side lamps. The sound of running water – whether it be via a physical water feature or background music – is believed to make us relax too, experts claim.

And if you want to bring biophilic design into the home on a budget, then the simple addition of indoor plants and rearranging the furniture so the focal point is the window, rather than the fireplace or TV, are quick wins.

Calming curves

Help break up harsh lines of a room and facilitate movement and flow through your home with curves.

Archways, arcs and scalloped edges are influencing furniture shops and design blogs right now, and for good reason. The softer silhouettes they create are welcoming and calming, catering to our need to feel comforted and cocooned.
