Whether you’re meeting friends, trying to entertain the family or just want to unwind after a hard week at work, there is a beer garden (or terrace) in the West Sussex/Hampshire area to suit your needs and appetite. The White & Brooks team is no stranger to a refreshing tipple in the summer sunshine and here’s our favourite places to relax outside.

  1. The Anglesey Arms, Halnaker

This traditional country pub has given its humble beer garden a serious upgrade. The Anglesey Arms team has created a secret garden, adorned the grounds with festoon lights, added planters and installed a stretch tent – safari style – to provide shelter from any showers or scorching sun. The garden backs on to a local vineyard for added charm.

  1. The Partridge Inn, Singleton

Families with young children should make a beeline for The Partridge Inn. The beer garden features a fully-equipped play area, go karts, a mini bike and Connect 4. There’s also children’s meal deals, a pizza kitchen and regular child-friendly events, including teddy bears’ picnics and bouncy castle weeks.

  1. The Fighting Cocks, Alverstoke

If you’re hankering after a pint of something cold in a truly traditional beer garden, look no further than The Fighting Cocks. There is plenty of seating, both in the sun and the shade, regular outdoor dining events, and a warm welcome for dogs and families.

  1. The Bat & Ball, Hambledon
  2. If you love the sound of leather on willow, head to The Bat & Ball. As its name suggests, this pub has a strong link to cricket. The beer garden overlooks spectacular open countryside, while the pub itself is opposite Broadhalfpenny Down cricket pitch.

  1. The Waverley, Aldwick

Enjoying a prime piece of real estate along Bognor Regis West’s seafront, The Waverley is a fantastic place to enjoy the fresh air, whatever the weather. There’s an extensive covered terrace to the front of the pub, with decking, brightly painted tables, sofas, and views of the beach and to the sea beyond.

  1. The Crown & Anchor, Chichester

Not a traditional beer garden but the terrace at The Crown & Anchor is one of the best for miles. It’s set on the edge of Chichester Harbour for an amazing waterside view and the landlord welcomes dogs. The terrace is served by a Garden Bar and Salt Shack – the latter serving amazing fresh seafood dishes – or enjoy table service by ordering through the app.

  1. The Ship Inn, Langstone

Another terrace, this time at The Ship Inn, attracts summer attention for its picturesque setting. The tables overlook both Chichester and Langstone Harbours, so it’s possible to watch the tide and small boats come in. As well as freshly-caught, local fish on the menu, it’s also possible to go crabbing at Langstone Harbour.

  1. The Anchor Bleu, Bosham

Staying waterside but moving around to the east is another terrace with a picture-perfect outlook. The Anchor Bleu’s outside area overlooks Bosham Quay - one of the most photographed spots among sunset lovers. Dogs are welcome, so find yourself a seat under one of the colourful parasols and order from the menu, which changes daily.

  1. The George Inn, Felpham

As if the beautiful village setting wasn’t enough, The George Inn also enjoys an attractive Secret Garden, with plenty of seating and shade. Additionally, there are three outdoor pods for hire – each seating four people – which can be prebooked and look gorgeous when lit up at night.
