What better way to beat the chill than whittling away your Sunday afternoon next to an open fireplace, waiting for a Sunday roast with all the trimmings.

With so many beautiful pubs in West Sussex to choose from, White & Brooks has put together a list of some of our top traditional choices to enjoy that most quintessential of British dishes, all whilst sitting next to a crackling, roaring fire.

The Lamb Inn in Pagham was built in the 17th century and you can feel the history as soon as you walk in. With its low ceilings, beams and big, open fireplace, it’s the perfect place to relax at the weekend.

Pagham is also home to The Lion, which dates back even further to the 15th century. It caters for various dietary needs with gluten-free, vegetarian and kids’ options, so everyone will leave with full, satisfied stomachs! On Sundays, food is served from 12pm to 3pm, and again from 6pm to 9pm.

Set in the beautiful gateway to the South Downs National Park, The Royal Oak in East Lavant prides itself on using locally sourced, fresh produce throughout its menus. And if you’re feeling too full to leave, you could always see if one of their bedrooms or two self-contained cottages are available to stay in overnight.

If it’s not yet the weekend but you’re hankering after a traditional roast then you’re in luck; The Beresford in Middleton-On-Sea serves up its delicious carvery from Tuesdays to Sundays. You can also take advantage of the fire if you’ve just come in from a wintry walk along the beach, which is only five minutes away.

Perfectly positioned in the centre of Chichester is The Hole in the Wall, which serves up a fantastic roast every Sunday. With vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, there’s something for everyone, so grab a menu and a seat by the huge fire.

Just a five-minute drive from Chichester is The Walnut Tree in the village of Runcton. You’ll find all the usual trimmings served with its roast, as well as gluten free options and smaller sized portions for children.

The Bull’s Head in Fishbourne has been converted from a 17th century farmhouse and encompasses all that you’d expect from a cosy, traditional pub. It serves up delicious home-cooked food and use locally sourced produce.

Just a short walk from the beach in Selsey is The Crown, where a full Sunday roast menu is offered from 12pm to 6pm every week. And if you’d prefer something a bit different, they have an extensive menu of other traditional pub grub for you to try.

The Partridge Inn, situated in the quaint village of Singleton within the South Downs National Park, has not one but three roaring fires for guests to enjoy. Dating back to the 16th century, the pub is packed-full of traditional features, and the perfect place for you and your family to enjoy a roast.

The Thatched House in Felpham, just outside of Bognor Regis, prides itself on cooking with fresh and locally sourced ingredients. It welcomes families for dining, providing children are aged 12 and over.

If you’re looking for unspoilt views of the stunning South Downs National Park, look no further than The White Horse in Graffham. Dating back to 1900, this beautiful pub enjoys stunning scenery from both its restaurant area and its bedrooms. The co-owner and chef is a former Fuller’s Griffin Trophy Winner for Best Country Pub, so you know you’re in safe hands!

If your weekend visit to one (or more!) of these pubs inspires you to move to West Sussex, give the White & Brooks offices in Chichester or Bognor Regis office a call.
