Hands up who loves a holiday? That feeling of sun, sea, freedom and fun is such a fleeting moment but why confine that vacation feeling to a long weekend or seven days?
Beaches, nature reserves, country cottages, waterside villages and city breaks – it’s all on offer here in West Sussex. Start with a staycation and stay forever. The White & Brooks estate agents are here to make your relocation dreams come true.
Here are five local dupes that are just as good as overseas options.
- Try West Wittering beach instead of Praia do Guincho, Cascais, Portugal
The sand dunes and beach cafés at Praia do Guincho, just outside of Lisbon, are a hit with locals and visitors but you don’t have to fly to Portugal for the experience. A fantastic substitute is East Head – a wild, unspoilt spot at West Wittering beach. Beautiful sand dunes, shingle and salt marshes combine to create a serene spot for sunbathing, picnics or a sunset dog walk.
- Try Bosham Harbour instead of Porto Ercole, Tuscany, Italy
Condé Nast Traveller flagged Porto Ercole on Tuscany’s Monte Argentario peninsula as one of Europe’s chicest destinations and it’s not hard to see why. Yachts bobbing in the harbour, family restaurants and sandy beaches make for an idyllic setting but it bears more than a passing resemblance to Bosham Harbour. Grab a table at The Anchor Bleu, Bosham’s harbourside pub, and you could almost be in Italy.
- Try Chichester Marina instead of Port Deauville, Normandy, France
Pretty places to moor your boat, access to amazing fishing waters, spectacular sunsets from chic little bars? Port Deauville ticks all the maritime boxes. No need to cross the channel to enjoy a waterside scene like this, however. Chichester Marina is an excellent match, especially if you bag a table at The Boat House or have a connection at Chichester Yacht Club.
- Try Bognor Regis instead of Rockley Beach, Barbados
Fine golden sands, waves lapping at the shore and a hammock slung between two trees make Rockley Beach in Barbados hard to beat but Bognor Regis does a great job trying. Palm trees aside, East Beach reveals wide expanses of sand at low tide, with opportunities to paddle board and kayak. There are plenty of bars close by if you want to create the true Caribbean vibe with a rum cocktail.
- Try Chichester instead of Cologne, Germany
As Germany’s fourth largest city, Cologne is a popular city break. The stunning cathedral dominates the skyline, with several shopping districts, cultural attractions and beer houses in its shadow. Its spiritual twin is Chichester. Both cities are steeped in Roman history with Gothic influences seen in their cathedrals, making them aesthetically similar. And while there are no German beer houses in Chichester, there is an Oktoberfest German beer festival at The Chantry pub.
