Property styling isn’t about making drastic changes or making rooms look pretty, it’s a marketing technique that makes homes appeal to a wide range of buyers. And as Jane Lee reveals, there’s really no need to break the bank.
- First impressions: spruce up the exterior, fix chipped paintwork, hide the bins and tidy any outside space; remove excess coats and shoes and replace tired doormats.
- Shop your home: look at rooms with a fresh eye and move around your furniture and accessories before splashing out on anything new.
- Let it go: create space and calm, and reduce moving costs, by waving goodbye to what you no longer need or love before the marketing photos are taken.
- Target audience: if it’s families, style at least one bedroom with a few toys; an area to work from home will appeal to young professionals.
- Small tweaks: ticking off niggly maintenance and repair jobs reduces the opportunity for buyers to knock money off your asking price.
- Emotional connection: too many personal items – photos, trophies, souvenirs, collections – are distracting and make it harder for viewers to imagine themselves moving in.
- Soft touch: upgrading towels, bedding, cushions and toiletries can make a big difference, plus you can take them all to your new place.
- Light show: clean everywhere, including the windows, and open curtains and blinds to let in natural light. Table lamps and mirrors brighten darker areas.
- Small details: add flowers and plants to the entrance and main rooms to bring them alive.
- Move-in ready: professional home stagers can advise on hitting that sweet spot between rooms looking too bland or too bold.
