Entering a new season is the perfect opportunity to give your home a fresh look, particularly if you are considering selling. With crisp days and long cosy nights ahead, we’ve put together some tips on how to achieve autumn atmosphere over the coming months.

Give colour a warm embrace

This season’s colour palette is all about embracing warm, earthy tones such as dusky pink, mustard yellow, terracotta, creams and light browns. Deep greens and blues are also becoming popular as a way of adding depth to a room. These colours will make your home feel more intimate the minute you walk through the door. And you don’t even need to paint a whole room to achieve the look – you could focus on a feature wall or even just update some of your accessories and artwork.

Mood lighting

As we prepare for the longer, darker nights, creating the right kind of ambience in our homes is key; one of the easiest ways to achieve this is through lighting. Freestanding floor lamps and table lamps can create multiple cosy areas and can turn the coldest looking room into one that exudes warmth. You could even get creative by adding fairy or LED lights into old mason jars and dotting them around your home. Bonus points for lit candles that perfume the air with spiced pumpkin, cinnamon, clove and ginger.

Be bold with accessories

Creating a new look for your home doesn’t necessarily mean huge amounts of DIY. Accessories can instantly bring a new lease of life and this autumn it’s all about being bold with your textures. Adding some plush velvet cushions or a chunky knitted throw to your sofas will give you a sense of warmth straightaway (plus the throw will actually keep you toasty!).

Accessories are also a great way to experiment with colour, so if you have muted tones on your walls, try adding some bold artwork, or decorate a fireplace or shelves with colourful trinkets. If you’re looking to add a statement piece, a faux-fur rug is the perfect way to add both texture and colour.

Bring the outdoors in

Autumn is visually one of the most beautiful seasons and one that we can still enjoy while indoors. You can tie in some outdoor elements by adding lush green houseplants to different areas of your property, and the use of terracotta pots will add to the warm colours. If you’re not the green-fingered type but are keen to embrace nature at home, you could add some botanical-print wallpaper or textiles, or simply opt for a vase of dried seed heads, rosehips and gnarly twigs.

Use natural materials

Using natural materials in your home will help to create a serene, calm atmosphere. Choose rattan, wool, bamboo and wood to stop an interior looking too synthetic. Not only will these looks make your home look fantastic, using natural products is also great for the environment.

Curved furniture and lines

One of the big home interior trends this year is the use of curved lines and furniture. Rounded edges are perceived to be more inviting than hard lines and by making just a few adjustments in your home, you could achieve a look that creates more of a natural flow throughout. There are endless ways to accomplish this, from adding an oval dining table to hanging a round mirror in your bathroom.
