When it comes to the interior colour of choice, is it time to say goodbye to grey? Early indications show 2025 is the year dove, silver, ash and even Farrow & Ball’s hallowed Elephant’s Breath step aside in favour of something warmer and more indulgent.
Leading the campaign is Pantone, whose Colour of the Year is the annual fashion zeitgeist. For 2025, the chosen shade is Mocha Mousse and as its name suggest, it’s a colour that takes its cues from the culinary world.
Imagine a bar of Galaxy, a velvety hot chocolate or a slab of hazelnut praline. Mocha Mousse is opulent and inviting – and it’s the first shade of brown Pantone has chosen in its 25 year trend forecasting history.
Run don’t walk to your nearest DIY store as Mocha Mousse is a brilliant colour to decorate with. Don’t be put off by its brown description - Mocha Mousse is one of a new breed of neutrals that can be incorporated into any décor. Here are four ideas to try:
- Create a calm bedroom: Mocha Mousse pairs beautifully with dusky pink and shades of chalky cream – a colour combination that’s dreamy for bedrooms. Add layers of linen fabrics and French-style furniture (look to the Louis XV and Rococo periods for inspiration) to create a tranquil yet stylish space.
Colours to combine: Lick’s White 06, Brown 01 and Pink 07
- Introduce texture to a living room: Mocha Mousse can inspire your upholstery choices as much as your paint colours. The shade is perfect for big ticket items – a leather sofa, a velvet armchair or a large footstool covered in jumbo cord. Use light neutrals and almost-black accents as a design backdrop.
Colours to combine: Dulux’s Moon Shimmer, Jasmine White and Basically Black.
- Add opulence to an office: if you’re on-board with the colour-drenching trend, a home office is a great place to try brown-on-brown. Using one or two different shades that are complementary to Mocha Mousse will stop the look becoming too monotone.
Colours to combine: Graham & Brown’s Hot Mocha, Chesterfield and Elderton.
- Upgrade a kitchen: Mocha Mousse can work one of two ways in a kitchen. If you can paint your cabinets, this shade of brown can become the star attraction. If not, use it as an accent colour. Mocha Mousse blends well with rich green hues and natural wood, so use these liberally in kitchen settings.
Colours to combine: Fired Earth’s Silver Needle, Dartmouth Green and Araucana Shell.
