Whether you prefer slathering on the sun cream and sitting in a deckchair, listening to the shipping forecast before setting sail or, like now, wrapping up warm to walk the dog along the beach, the allure of the coast remains as strong as ever.

As an island we are blessed with some of the best bays, beaches and marinas perhaps in Europe, and some of the most stunning are down here on the South Coast. The allure of being beside the seaside ensures property values hold firm. In fact, when the Halifax analysed 209 coastal locations across Britain in 2023, it found house prices had more than doubled in some places since 2012.

The Halifax’s findings were followed by a report in Country Life magazine published this year. It found the average house prices across Britain’s most popular coastal hotspots had increased 4.2% between June 2023 and June 2024. For comparison, it said the national average house price had risen by just 0.8%.

It’s not just a property’s coastal location that makes it so popular. There’s also a premium attached to its watery outlook, with a sea view reportedly adding as much as 66% to a home’s value.

While it may seem misplaced to dream about sunny days on the South Coast while we’re in winter’s icy grip, now is a great time to investigate buying a coastal property. With purchases taking 12-16 weeks to complete, make an offer now and you’ll be moved in time for spring, when you can find your favourite spot on the beach.
