Red, white or rosé, we’re a nation of wine lovers. So what better way to celebrate National Wine Day (25th May) then by checking out some of the stunning vineyards West Sussex has to offer?

Nestled in the hamlet of West Ashling is the 50-acre Ashling Park Estate, which prides itself on a unique vineyard experience. In addition to tours and tastings, it serves food from local suppliers in its stylish restaurant and has a number of luxurious lodges you can bed down in, built by Will Hardie of Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces TV show.

During your visit to the Tinwood Estate near Chichester, you’ll be given the chance to explore the vineyards and taste its award-winning sparkling wines back in the tasting room. You can also treat yourself to one of its traditional afternoon teas (with fizz of course!). If you really want to fully immerse yourself, you can always stay in one of three lodges, which are set in the heart of the vineyards themselves.

Stopham Vineyard specialises in white and sparkling wine, and can be found in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within the South Downs National Park. Tours are hosted by one of the winemakers, and you’ll be taken around both the vineyard and the winery before stopping to sample some of the delicious bottled produce.

Tucked between Littlehampton and Worthing is Highdown Vineyard, where a range of still and sparkling wines are produced every year. It offers group tours and tastings, and if you’re looking to make your day a little more special, it can adapt its packages to include light lunches, canapés and cream teas.

As well as running tours in its vineyard, The Wiston Estate hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including foraging for wild ingredients before shaking them up to make delicious cocktails. You can also relax and enjoy a meal at Chalk Restaurant, where the team use fresh produce that has either been grown on the estate or sourced from local neighbours.

Growing eight different types of grapes in a warm microclimate protected by the South Downs, the Nutbourne Vineyard can lay on a fantastic picnic spread or cheeseboard to accompany your visit. You have the option of booking a tour or following the self-guided vineyard trail. Look out for the vineyard’s family of alpacas as you take in the vines, before settling down to sample some tipples beside the site’s historic windmill.

If you’re hoping to try some fine wines in elegant surroundings, Digby’s in Arundel is a great option. It sources its grapes from vineyards along the South Coast of England, and you can try a ‘flight of wines’ while learning about the history and direction of the brand. It also hosts regular special events, including blending masterclasses and fizz-based cocktail making classes.
